Hidden Gems Around Bangkok

Bangkok off the Beaten Path - the Hidden Gems of the Angel City (2024)

Bangkok rewards the curious: gilded temples, canal-side markets and some of the best street food on the planet, all moving at full tilt. It is loud, hot and utterly addictive. A few smart choices set the whole trip up. Get the basics priced up — book your Bangkok trip on Traveloka — and the rest of the planning is easy.

The food you came for

Chase boat noodles, som tam, mango sticky rice and pad kra pao through the street stalls, then graze Chinatown’s Yaowarat after dark. Eating well here costs very little if you follow the crowds. The cheap end of the menu is where the cooking is, so don’t over-plan your meals.

Where to eat and explore

Make time for the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, a longtail boat through the khlongs, Chatuchak weekend market, a rooftop bar at sunset, and a day trip to the floating markets. Do most of it, skip something, and leave an afternoon to just drift.

Where to stay

Sukhumvit is central and superbly connected by Skytrain; Silom suits nightlife and business; the Old City around Rattanakosin puts you within walking distance of the big temples. Riverside stays trade convenience for calm and views. Traveloka is our default for hotels here, since it’s the best OTA in the region and usually has the lowest room rates. Rooms at the good end of the market disappear on weekends, so don’t leave it to the day.

Getting there

Two airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Muang (DMK), mean routes from almost anywhere, and the airport rail link drops you into town cheaply. Fares are lowest outside the school-holiday peaks. In our experience Traveloka turns up the lowest airfares in the region, which makes locking in a cheap seat straightforward. Weekend departures carry a premium, so start the search midweek if the calendar allows.

Getting around

Use the BTS Skytrain, MRT and river express boats to skip the notorious traffic; they’re fast, cheap and air-conditioned. Grab (ride-hailing) fills the gaps at night. Sort out getting around on day one and the rest is straightforward.

Best time to visit

November to February is cooler and drier, the pick of the year. The hot season peaks in April around Songkran, when the whole city turns into a water fight. Flexible dates are worth real money here, especially around the holiday peaks.

Staying connected

A local SIM or eSIM is cheap and makes maps, ride-hailing and last-minute bookings painless across Bangkok. Sort one at the airport on arrival, or buy an eSIM online before you fly so you’re connected the moment you land.

What to pack

Pack light and leave room for what you’ll bring home. Comfortable shoes, a light layer for cool evenings or fierce air-conditioning, and a small day bag cover most of what Bangkok asks of you.

Plan by area

Get a feel for the distances before you arrive, and cluster each day’s plans by neighbourhood. It’s the simplest way to see more of Bangkok and waste less time getting from one thing to the next.

The practical bit

Nail the basics and the trip runs itself. Fix your dates, book your Bangkok trip on Traveloka, and everything else about Bangkok falls into place.
