Daredevil – The Movie

Daredevil is a superhero film released in 2003, which was inspired by a Marvel comic of the same name. The film was directed by Mark Steven Johnson and it was meant to illustrate the darker aspects of the life of Matt Murdock who is a lawyer by day and a masked vigilante by night. The lead role is played by Ben Affleck and the film is full of action, drama and romance where a single person is shown to possess two extreme personalities.

Main Characters

The story revolves around Matt Murdock, who got blind as a child due to a toxic waste leakage. The name of the movie’s main character is Matt Murdock who is blinded during a childhood accident but this does not stop him from becoming a vigilante. He works as an attorney by day, putting on a facade of intimidation and crusading for the cause in the courts in New York’s hell’s kitchen area. But at night in a matted suit, it’s a different Murdock as he transforms into a Daredevil, a superhero who uses extraordinary senses to rid the city of crimes.

Even more intriguing is when Elektra Natchios, a rich heiress and martial artist portrayed by Jennifer Garner enters the picture. Matt and Elektra’s love affair is interrupted when Bullseye (Colin Farrell), an assassin sent by crime boss Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) comes into play. His targets are the Matt’s enemies known as Daredevil who brings even greater levels of deceit and treachery to the perfectionist hero’s struggle for justice.

Release date and reception

On 14 February, 2003, „Daredevil” made it to the cinemas tomodatchered by movie goers and critics alike even at its first sight. Simultaneously, not all the audience and evaluators were as forgiving. Indeed, while most fans of international cinema were enchanted by action sequences, how the picture looked and the cast’s performances, some others were not satisfied because there were no consistent moderation or enhancement to the conveyance of plot evolution.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the movie 43 % of critics’ scores and 35% of the possible viewer scores. It was felt that the film was torn between its darker aspects and the need to deliver a mainstream superhero movie, and it resulted in a somewhat patched-up film.

The soundtrack was internally appraised by the cinema for its efficiency in extending the atmosphere of the film and the emotional degree of its content.

Themes and Analysis

“Daredevil” has a number of themes that include justice, revenge and man’s nature etc. The storyline of the film focuses on Matt Murdock’s internal conflict where he wants to fight for the law but also wants to be a vigilante. This dual-thought process is also highlighted in his relationships which misery happens with Elektra who has her own blind and furious vendetta.

Another theme that comes out strongly in the film is the idea of vision and observation. Even though he is blind, Matt has other senses that give him other ways to interact with different environments, overturning the traditional definition of the disability. To be able to “see” objects vibrate through sound makes the character very interesting as he is not just any other superhero.

The film taps the theme of justice and morality through the idea of Hell’s Kitchen being portrayed as a shady and seedy place. The process of eliminating crime from the territories of the city seems also as the process of a daredevil to come to peace with himself.

Behind the Scenes

In the course of working on “Daredevil”, a number of hurdles were crossed as well as a number of creative choices made that would affect the end result of the film.
